Future WARTHINK 025: F-35 Radar Stealth Epic $1.72 T Failure; DoD Wants Egad, the NGAD--Will its Wings Fold or Amerika Will Fold?

Correcting the F-35 Failure to Be Stealthy Enough: Egads, the NGAD!

Brace yourself.

The USAF just admitted that ALL of the F-35s produced to date are KRAP and they wouldn't use them to try to penetrate mainland Kommunist Chinese China.

QUOTE:

Pentagon leaders had expected 2020 to be a big year for the $1.727 trillion F-35 program. The long-anticipated full-rate production decision that would have allowed the F-35 to move beyond testing and development and into mass production was scheduled to be made by 2020. Coronavirus-related travel restrictions hindered some development fixes in 2020, but any such impacts were minor compared to the many long-standing issues with the program that predate the pandemic. As the F-35 enters its twentieth year, program officials have delayed the important full-rate production milestone indefinitely because the program still can’t complete the initial operational testing phase.

Weapon programs undergo operational testing to see if they are effective in combat and suitable for use in the hands of the troops. This is different from the developmental testing that engineers and developers conduct to determine whether the weapon meets the engineering specifications of the manufacturer’s contract. The difference between the two processes can roughly be compared to field and laboratory experimentation. In the case of the F-35, the developmental testing done to date has already revealed major shortcomings, but the most serious flaws emerged once the F-35 was in the hands of real operators in the field during operational testing.

‘IF WE CAN CHANGE, WE CAN WIN’

An U.S. Air Force war game shows what the service needs to hold off — or win against — China in 2030

BY VALERIE INSINNA

QUOTE:

For years, Air Force officials have portrayed the F-35 as the aircraft that it would use to infiltrate into enemy airspace to knock out surface-to-air missiles and other threats without being seen. However, in the war game, that role was played by the more survivable [FANTASY] NGAD, in part due to the F-35’s inability to traverse the long ranges of the Pacific without a tanker nearby, Hinote said.

Instead, the F-35 attacked Chinese surface ships and ground targets, protected American and Taiwanese assets from Chinese aircraft, and provided cruise missile defense during the exercise. But “it’s not the one that’s pushing all the way in [Chinese airspace], or even over China’s territory,” Hinote said.

Notably, the F-35s used during the game were the more advanced F-35 Block 4 [FANTASY] aircraft under development, which will feature new computing equipment known as “Tech Refresh 3,” enhancements to its radar and electronic warfare systems, and new weapons.

We wouldn’t even play the current version of the F-35,” Hinote said. “It wouldn’t be worth it. … Every fighter that rolls off the line today is a fighter that we wouldn’t even bother putting into these scenarios.”

That's $1, 727, 000 BILLION wasted.

Down-the-drain.

DoD claims they need a do-over--a new "6th Generation" aka "Next Generation Air Dominance" (NGAD) fighter-bomber.

Egads.

Boys & Girls we are in SHTF.

We need to put every F-35B where they can do some short-range battle good--VTOL operate lightly air-to-air armed on the fantail of every USN TIN CAN surface ship possible just to DEFEND THEM FROM BEING SUNK.  Create a Maritime Naval Defense Force (MNDF) whatever--destroyer/cruiser pilots like the SC-1 SeaHawk seaplane fighters of old.

www.combatreform.org/seaplanefighters.htm

All future USAF F-35s should be "C" models with folding wings so they can at least be ground-mobile to avoid being Destroyed-On-The-Ground (D.O.T.G.).

The naval NGAD should be a SEAPLANE FIGHTER like the Convair SeaDart since it looks like no one is event talking about a STOVL version--much less VTOL jump jet version.

GMTA Boeing realizes Vectored Thrust Canards (VTC) are needed for STOL and Super Maneuverability (SM) and are pondering retracting ones for stealth until needed for SM after the "merge". Just like the original simple VTC ASTOL concept that begat the Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) and what we advocate in a F-20V TigerShark MUDFIGHTER variant for the U.S. ARMY in our JGRF book. GMTA: the USAF CoS General Brown, wants an inexpensive GEN 4.5 fighter-bomber like the Gripen or the F-20 to do local air defense and CAS missions--just like our MUDFIGHTERS!

Any Hopium in the next $1 TRILLION dollar NGAD boondoggle?

The USAAF A-25 Shrike CAS Dive Bomber had Folding Wings--until they got their hands on what was being made--and then they no longer wanted the mission in view of German Stuka losses...no longer in vogue--after the war, legendary Luftwaffe pilot Hans Rudel educated the USAF for the OAX that became America's Stuka--the A-10 Warthog the 1943 North Africa centralize-everything, fighter-bombers-for-everything "Mafia" hates ie; helping the U.S. ARMY win wars by MANEUVER and not the Douhet panacea: delusional FIREPOWER.

Aside from the rear laser to swat down enemy missiles, NGAD is just another radar stealth shape massage--oh, this time it'll work!

The U.S. military, as a whole, has been exploring concepts of operations in recent years that focus heavily on being able to operate from austere and remote areas with very limited infrastructure in the event that large, established bases are destroyed or are otherwise unavailable.

The only other good I spotted was the naval NGAD's WINGS FOLD--which means IF the vulnerable-air-base-pampered USAF buys [voluntold like the F-4 Phantom II?] them....they could be ground-mobile to avoid being D.O.T.G. by either TBATE threats:

The Germans slightly "busy" with WW2 were able to fold the wings of their Stuka CAS dive bomber for a planned aircraft carrier; their Fieseler Fi-156 Storch Grasshopper STOL observation planes had folding wings for ground mobility: what's the USAF excuse in the 21st Century? Too hard to do?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Curtiss_SB2C_Helldiver#US_Army_and_US_Marine_Corps_service

Built at Curtiss' St. Louis plant, 900 aircraft were ordered by the USAAF under the designation A-25A Shrike.[19] The first ten aircraft had folding wings, while the remainder of the production order omitted this feature.

Surplus to the USAAF by 1943, some went to the RAAF, who rejected all but ten!

So the USAF has had fighter-bombers with folding wings thanks to sharing excellent type aircraft with the Navy. With folding wing-enabled, ground mobility, TBATE damages can be avoided:

...as well as TBAM enemy actions:

QUOTE:

Most significantly, the Germans learned the importance of mobility for both their ground and air forces, and equipped flying squadrons and ground establishments with sufficient transport to keep up with fast-moving troops, enabling continual support through the advance and only infrequent interruptions for a change of base.[32]

While advocates of the ground forces requested a dive bomber capable of operating accurately in close proximity to ground forces, air advocates preferred to focus on light, twin-engined bombers with the necessary range and payload to raid enemy airfields, making them far more useful in the air superiority campaign than for close support.[37]

The AAF also adopted the distinction between “tactical” and “strategic” air forces expressed in German doctrinal manuals, but it was clear that it did not value the two equally.

Despite wartime protestations that all aviation had to be concentrated under a single air commander, the AAF was more than happy to assign obsolete reconnaissance and artillery-spotting aircraft to the tactical air forces while retaining the most capable front-line fighters and bombers in the “strategic” force, where they would be less likely to be drawn into the ground battle.

Prewar exercises demonstrated the inadequacy of this separation, as the army-cooperation-type aircraft, such as the O-47, proved inadequate for either reconnaissance or artillery spotting, leading the army to eventually develop its own light [Grasshopper STOL] aviation, using liaison aircraft assigned to individual artillery battalions for correction, coupled with demands for more capable interdiction and close support aircraft to intervene in the ground battle.

In short, France was a disaster for the RAF. The shortest response time achieved from requests for air support to aircraft overhead was four hours, and this required officers phoning London on ground lines to arrange support.[39] As a result, aircraft often arrived too late to effectively intervene, and advancing German ground forces eventually overran their airfields.

Summary/Conclusion

If the USAF will not bend and folds its wings--make remaining purchases F-35C models and insist the NGAD is ground-mobile, will we break and Amerika "fold" from bankruptcy?
