The helicopter is a technological DEAD end that should no longer be pursued. The ones we are stuck with should be given WINGS and pusher units like the AH-56 Cheyenne attack gunship had pic at the top of this page. Longer-ranging compound helicopters can also self-deploy to avoid playing Russian nesting doll airlift games stuffed into fixed-wing transports.

If wheeled landing gear cannot lock downward and/or Pilot, Engine and Airframe (PEA) flight cannot continue to a smooth runway, the main wheels must protrude out a bit for a no damage, controlled belly landing which can cling quickly to the earth and decelerate the aircraft without a landing gear leg sticking and flipping the craft into a crumpled fiery wreckage. The tires should be TWEELs that cannot go flat.

The landing gear shouldn't extend far even in a regular landing like the Lockheed Constellation/EC-121s did just begging for fiery crash landings just because their massive props need the ground clearance.
