Fraud Vitiates Everything (FVE). In the Breaker Morant case, five Australian officers and one English officer of an irregular unit, the Bushveldt Carbineers, were court-martialled for summarily executing twelve Boer prisoners,[61] and also for the murder of a German missionary believed to be a Boer sympathiser, all allegedly under unwritten orders approved by Kitchener. Shortly before 19:30 hrs the same day, steaming for the Russian port of Arkhangelsk during a Force 9 gale, Hampshire struck a mine laid by the newly launched German U-boat U-75 (commanded by Kurt Beitzen) and sank west of the Orkney Islands. Recent research has set the death toll of those aboard Hampshire at 737.[112] Only twelve men survived.[112][113] Amongst the dead were all ten members of his entourage. Kitchener was seen standing on the quarterdeck during the approximately twenty minutes that it took the ship to sink. His body was never recovered.[113][114]

Witton's book, Scapegoats of the Empire, was originally published in 1907 by D. W. Paterson of Melbourne, but was long unavailable. Witton's main assertion, as indicated by the book's provocative title, was that he, Morant, and Handcock were made scapegoats by the British authorities in South Africa — that they were made to take the blame for British war crimes against the Boers, and that the trial and executions were carried out by the British for political reasons, partly to cover up a controversial and secret "no prisoners" policy promulgated by Kitchener, and partly to appease the Boer government over the killing of Boer prisoners, in order to facilitate a peace treaty; the Treaty of Vereeniging as signed on 31 May, 1902.

 

Witton also claimed that many of the accusations about them, which led to their arrest and trial, were made by disaffected members of their regiment whose rebellious behaviour had been suppressed by Morant and Handcock.

 

When World War I broke out, an embittered Witton did not rush to enlist. After former and future Prime Minister Andrew Fisher pledged during the 1914 general election that Australia would defend Britain "to the last man and last shilling," Witton intimated that he would be that last man.

 

George married Mary Louisa Humphrey in September 1913. She died in March 1931, aged 56 years, and was buried at the Lutwyche Cemetery, Brisbane.[11][12] In September 1932, he married Carolen Ellen Stranger. He did not have any children, although he and Mary by 1928 sought to adopt an orphan, only to be denied as Witton was 'a disgraced Soldier'.[5] [EDITOR: DISGUSTING!]

The petitions committee considered Unkles' petition on 15 March 2010. He appeared before it, along with others including historian Craig Wilcox.[15] Committee member Alex Hawke MP stated: "there is in my view serious and compelling evidence that some form of redress should be given, all these years later, to those men executed by the British".[16] The then Attorney-General of Australia, Robert McLelland referred the petition to the U.K. government.

 

On behalf of the Crown, Unkles' petition was rejected by U.K. Defence Secretary Liam Fox, in November 2010.
