We are thankfully not in Shit-Hits-the-Fan (SHTF) social anarchy demanding you load your SKSes, AR15s--people are living civilized thanks to a steady WalMart food supply. 

Therefore, NHTF is an excellent time to improve your Tactics, Techniques, Environment, Enemy & Equipment (TTPE3). The sling as a weapon out-ranging bows/arrows by 100 meters--400 meter reach. Tacticians called on all Roman Soldiers carrying a sling and bullets. David defeating the GIANT Goliath of course is our most remembered example--but it ignores the large-scale battle use of slingers as a combined arms.

About twenty or thirty years ago I was invited to a meeting of Balearic slingers.They may still be holding meetings. With my slinging skills I would have probably ended up running the car park. On a good day all my stones go forward. The sling has many virtues, but is not a weapon you master overnight. One of the characters in my novella, "Anatopismo" selects the sling because it posed a challenge. "Survival Weapons" also has a section on improvised/ primitive weapons including the sling. Best literary account of a sling is in a David Drake book, "Birds of Prey".
